Why Waterfall

WHY Waterfall is a real-time audio spectrum and waterfall analyzer for radio receivers.

It is designed especially for radios without a built-in spectrum display, turning an ordinary receiver into a modern signal-monitoring tool using only the radio’s audio output and a PC sound card.

Version 2.1 adds a greatly improved interface together with an integrated CW Decoder and CW Skimmer.

Main Features

  • Real-time spectrum and waterfall display
  • Works with standard receiver audio – no SDR hardware required
  • Stereo I/Q support for wider spectrum display
  • Adjustable DSP bandwidth and noise reduction
  • Click a signal to monitor it locally
  • Peak detection and automatic signal finding
  • Adjustable waterfall gain and zoom
  • Audio recording
  • CW decoding with WPM indication
  • 12-channel CW Skimmer
  • Automatic callsign detection
  • Detected callsigns can be displayed directly in the waterfall
  • Band presets and RF frequency reference

The CW Skimmer continuously watches multiple signals across the displayed spectrum. When a callsign is identified, it can be shown directly next to the corresponding CW trace in the waterfall, making it much easier to find beacons, CQ calls and other active stations.

WHY Waterfall is particularly useful for CW, beacon monitoring, weak-signal work and older radios where a conventional receiver would otherwise provide no visual indication of activity across the band.

The philosophy remains simple: connect the audio, select the band and start watching signals.
